I am thinking of taking out the grass in my yard and converting to desert scape. I have been told that I have to have 50% of the area planted, what does this mean?If you are removing 1,000 square feet of grass, you have to score 500 points from the trees, shrubs, palms and plants that you put in once the grass has been removed. A tree might score as many as 250 points, and a shrub might only score 40 points. Different items have different points value. When your point’s value has reached half of the square feet of grass, then you have your 50%. Back to TopI have just had a new lawn paid in my back yard and I have noticed that some of the sprinkler heads don’t spray as much water as the others, why is this?As your sprinkler system is new I would say that you might have too many sprinkler heads all working off of one valve. The general rule of thumb is, for every 500 square feet of grass you need a separate valve. It might also be that your water pressure is low, and this would have the same effect as having too many sprinkler heads. If it were an old system then I would suggest that some of the heads need replacing.
Back to TopI have seen some trees and palms in commercial areas that have white tubes coming out of the ground right next to them, what are these tubes doing? The tubes are for watering. When planting a large tree or palm, and in commercial areas they tend to be large, it is always best to position watering tubes next to the root ball when planting. The drip emitters are placed into the tubes and this allows for the water to get right down to the base of the root ball.
Back to TopI want to grow some vegetables in my garden but the soil is so poor that every time I try, they don’t really amount to anything, how can I improve my crop?I have found that the best way to grow vegetables here in Las Vegas is by forming some raised beds. Whether you use bricks, lumber or pile up some flag stone to create a more rustic looking wall, the goal is to give you the chance of adding some quality soil. Before making the raised bed loosen the ground that you intend to cover. Once this is done form your walls, install the drip lines if you intend to use them, and then fill the bed with 60% soil and 40% compost. I would suggest that you aim for a depth of 12 inches of quality soil. Back to TopHow do I decide which contractor to use to build my new yard? The first things you need to find out are whether or not the company holds a current license, are they bonded and are they insured. If any of the questions are answered no, then they are not for you. If the project is not too expensive, let’s say a total of $2,500.00 then the company shouldn’t need to ask you for a deposit. Insist on a written quotation, and ask for a detailed written explanation of what it is they plan to do. You should also be given, in writing, a list of the sizes and varieties of trees and shrubs that they intend to plant. Don’t forget you can always check with the State Board to see if a license is valid or not. Back to TopWhat is the best food that I can use to feed all of the trees and shrubs in my yard?Because we live in the desert I would say that there isn’t, ‘one,’ best food. The best approach to feeding trees, palms or shrubs, vegetables or fruit trees in our area is to buy specific foods. Take a trip to Star Nursery and you will find a whole variety of different foods specifically formulated for the soil type that we have. Here in the desert I have found that it is not a case of, one size fits all. Back to TopI have a pond in my garden and I need a way to stop the water from becoming a thick green pea soup, how can I do this? There are a couple of ways to do this, and the first is shade. If you can plant trees or high growing shrubs so that they cast shadows over at least 75% of the water, you should find that this helps. You can also add chemicals to the water, and the chemicals kill the algae as it forms. A more expensive way to control algae is to fit a, ‘blue light.’ The blue light system is fitted anywhere within the pond water flow, and as the water continuously flows over the light, the algae is killed. One advantage of this system is that it is fish, pet and child friendly Back to TopCan I grow citrus trees in Las Vegas? In a word, ‘yes.’ I have found that the best way to grow citrus is in a large pot/tub/planter. I prefer to grow the dwarf variety rather than the full tree size, as they are better suited to container living. Any of the good nurseries will have a citrus soil mix, and they will also sell citrus food. The one thing you need to remember about growing citrus is, they like regular watering but hate to have, ‘wet feet.’ No matter where you plant your citrus tree ensure that they have good drainage. What does, ‘deep watering,’ mean? The term, ‘deep watering,’ means exactly what it sounds like; the plant prefers to have the water penetrate deeply into the soil. The best way to achieve this is to control the water supply so that it is delivering water very slowly and over a longer period. The slower the delivery the more time there is for the water to seep down to the lower levels of the root system. Deep watering often means less watering cycles so if you have a drip system for the rest of the yard, and just one plant that requires deep watering, take it our of the drip system and use a garden hose. If you have a mix of watering types, then consider having a separate drip line and valve installed so that these plants can be watered independently from the others. Are there any down sides to having artificial grass installed in my yard?To be honest the answer to this question depends on family. If the artificial grass is to be just a small section placed in the front of your home, meant as nothing more that eye appeal, then no, no down sides. On the other hand, if the grass is intended for the back yard, a place for children to play on, then you should know that in the summer, the surface temperature could become very hot when placed in full sun. On other thing to consider is whether or not you have a dog. If your dog is drawn to the grass and uses it as a toilet, then you might get a build up of urine under the grass and the smell could become offensive. Be it heat or smell, a good soaking with a garden hose can generally deal with these problems, but they are possible problems that you should be aware of.
